Frauke Urban is Professor in the management of sustainable energy systems at the Royal Institute of Technology KTH in Sweden. She researches and teaches about sustainable energy transitions, climate change mitigation and decarbonization of energy and transport systems.

Aviation transports more than 4 million passengers annually, is highly dependent on fossil fuels and accounts for about 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions. To reduce the climate impact of aviation, new fuels and technologies are needed such as sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), electric propulsion and green hydrogen. This presentation outlines the progress that is being made towards sustainable energy transitions in the aviation industry, as well as policy changes and behavioural perspectives.

Research and evidence form the basis for CANIE’s content, advocacy and decisions. The Academic Advisory Board is an expert committee that helps provide advice to further strengthen CANIE’s work and influence, and will contribute to CANIE’s objectives to:

• Develop greater consciousness across the sector of how the international education sector contributes to climate change and the urgency of our need to act.

• Support our members to take practical, ambitious action to reduce the emissions associated with international operations and global mobility and to drive change within their own institutions and organisations.

• Run events, and commission or develop research, training and practical guidelines to support these aims.

The Academic Advisory Board provides advice on climate change and international education related matters or, when appropriate, responds to requests from the CANIE Global Board in relation to wider issues raised by stakeholders. The Academic Advisory Board is also asked to comment on the development of CANIE Global’s content and other CANIE produced documentation.

Leticia, a psychotherapist and the founder behind MindPlace Center, leads a multicultural therapy hub catering to the mental health needs of international students and expatriates. She combines her clinical practice with her role as a professor at IE University and Syracuse University.

This session aims to explore climate psychology, diving into its complexities and tackling the urgent issue of eco-anxiety. Our goal is to uncover strategies to alleviate this concern while deepening our understanding of its causes. Additionally, we seek to promote a shift towards sustainable behaviors driven by compassion, fostering a more harmonious relationship with our planet.

The application by the Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE) to be accredited as an observer organization was approved by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) General Assembly on 30 November 2023 at the opening of COP28. A few months before COP 28,
CANIE received accreditations for two delegates to attend the event.

Hear from the CANIE delegates for COP28 who will share their reflections and summaries about COP 28 negotiations and outcomes and some recommendations regarding how we can plan for COP29.

Marianne Mensah is the founder of CIEL which supports education and businesses defining ESG and climate strategies. Marianne has 10 years’ experience teaching climate innovation and sustainability in higher education. She previously worked on sustainable development programmes for UN agencies and international development organizations.

Savo Heleta is an internationalisation specialist in the International Education and Partnerships directorate at Durban University of Technology in South Africa. Savo has also worked on post-war peacebuilding and youth leadership development projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina and post-war capacity building and leadership development in South Sudan.

The global Green Office Movement originated in the Netherlands, at Maastritch University in September 2010, with the vision to enable higher education sectors to be drivers for sustainability and the mission to incorporate sustainability within the higher education sector.

Green Office Toitū (GOT) was founded in December 2021 at Otago Polytechnic Auckland International Campus and joined the global Green Office Movement as its first Australasian member. Primarily, GOT operates as a sustainability organisation operated by students for students. Some staff are involved, such as the organisation’s coordinators and staff volunteers who are passionate about embedding sustainability throughout campus life.

Why is climate action so critical to students? What do students expect from their colleges, universities, study abroad programmes in terms of action on climate solutions and climate-related curriculum? Nenie, Ann and Kristin will share their own personal stories of how they felt empowered, what elements contributed to them feeling empowered, and how they made change happen. As a take away, the audience should be inspired to then create this kind of enabling environment within their own contexts.
