CANIE Climate Action Week April 2023
We’re delighted to announce the schedule of sessions and events that will be taking place during CANIE Climate Action Week April 2023!
Join international educators and practitioners around the world taking part in the thematic sessions and tune in to two live podcast events addressing hot topics surrounding climate action in international education today. You will also have the opportunity to connect with, be inspired by and learn from fellow professionals during our interactive chapter meetings and networking events.

Oceania Chapter Meeting
This CAW April 2023 session involves an introduction to CANIE Oceania - terms of reference, Padlet, leadership team introductions, & recent awards. In addition to being a regional chapter meeting, working groups are presented for the audience to get more information about the working group of their interest.

CANIE Climate Dialogues - A LIVE Podcast Event: Research on COIL Effectiveness has Arrived!
In this live Podcast recording of the CANIE Climate Dialogues, CJ Tremblay returns for a special live episode with co-host Kelly Davis, and they are joined by COIL expert (and return podcast guest!) Simone Hackett to talk about her new research on the effectiveness of COIL in developing intercultural competencies. This groundbreaking research is what many of us in this space have been waiting for as we look to better understand the effectiveness of collaborative online international learning on the international education experience with some DATA!

Edward Urunsak | Head of Marketing & Partnerships @ NOVVA Technology
Edward is part of the small but active team at NOVVA, leading on the growth of the company’s external presence and the relationship development and partnership building that it entails. With a diverse professional background spanning several sectors, Edward has spent the last 7 years in education - from study abroad and international partnerships at Regent’s University London, to his current occupation geared towards bringing sustainable and accessible online solutions to high schools, university recruiters and the students they seek to engage.
Zach Tobin | Director of Member Relations - United States @ ISEP Study Abroad
Zach Tobin is the Director of Member Relations for the United States at ISEP Study Abroad. Zach also chairs ISEP’s Sustainability Taskforce and has made signing the CANIE Accord one of ISEP’s first signature actions on sustainability and climate change. Zach earned his MA in Student Affairs Administration at Michigan State University and BA in International Studies at the University of Washington. Prior to his position at ISEP, Zach served in a variety of international education positions in Michigan, Oregon, Arizona, and Washington State.
Kaitlin Sommerfeld | Assistant Director of Overseas & Off-Campus Programs @ Lewis & Clark College
Kaitlin Sommerfeld is the Assistant Director of Overseas & Off-Campus Programs at Lewis & Clark College. In addition to working to ensure that L&C upholds the sustainability commitments outlined in their CANIE agreement, Kaitlin is currently developing a climate education pre-departure orientation module which will be required for all L&C students participating in overseas programs. Kaitlin holds an MA in International Education Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and a BA in Hispanic Studies from Lewis & Clark College. Kaitlin is excited by the potential that international education has to further sustainability initiatives, and enthusiastic about supporting this effort at Lewis & Clark.
Lindsey Lyons | Director of Sustainability Learning @ Dickinson College
Lindsey Lyons is the Director of Sustainability Learning at Dickinson College. She is working to embed sustainability across the curriculum and into education abroad. Lindsey has overseen many initiatives that have helped Dickinson secure recognition as a national leader in sustainability and as a carbon neutral institution. Lindsey has a B.S. in biology from Lynchburg College and a M.S. in environmental education from Southern Oregon University. As a teacher, outdoor school creator, former community extension agent for Oregon State University and experiential education advocate, Lindsey understands that education is key to a sustainable future and is working to make those connections.

Jo Iberg | Group Manager Sustainability @ IDP Education
Jo Iberg is the Group Manager, Sustainability at IDP Education. She was appointed to this newly created role in April 2022 to drive the organisation’s sustainability agenda to the next level. In the first 12 months, Jo has sought to elevate the climate conversation within IDP, moving beyond emissions reporting to firm commitments, including signing the CANIE Accord.
Jo is a respected senior sustainability professional with over 12 years’ experience as a sustainability leader across a range of industries, from waste management and manufacturing to telecommunications and finance. Prior to joining IDP, Jo worked at one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, and led the organisation to achieve carbon neutrality and Climate Active certification.

Where to start with sustainability of internationalisation in your institution? Session I
In this CAW April 2023 session, you get to hear the experiences of three speakers from different countries, institutions and roles. They share with you the challenges of plunging into this, at times, dazzling topic. The satisfaction and frustrations, some good choices and some bad. Examples explored include creating a Sustainability Program for inbound study abroad students and Developing a green travel policy for staff.

Adinda van Gaalen | Coordinator Research Policy team and Strategic Advisor Internationalisation @ Inholland University of Applied Sciences
Adinda is part of the management team of the Department of Education and Research Policy & Legal Affairs at Inholland University of Applied Sciences, which has locations in 8 cities in the Netherlands. Adinda is also a part time PhD candidate at Ghent University in Belgium. Her research focuses on dilemmas in internationalisation strategies, including the carbon footprint. Previously, she was a policy advisor and researcher at Nuffic where she developed expertise in various educational sectors. Adinda was involved in the development of a Green Travel Policy at Nuffic, Ghent University and Inholland UAS.
Monica Perez-Bedmar | Professor, Adviser to Environmental Observatory @ SLU Madrid, Syracuse University Madrid
Mónica Pérez-Bedmar obtained her BS and M.Sc. in Oceanography in the U.S. There she worked for several Environmental Organizations as education outreach manager and volunteer coordinator. She returned to Spain in 2000 and joined the Association of North-American University Programs in Spain (APUNE), the past five years as Executive Director. She teaches oceanography and environmental science in several US study abroad programs in Madrid, and directs a traveling seminar on Marine Ecology. She is pursuing a doctorate at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, focusing on how experiential learning increases environmental education and awareness. She is also actively working towards the sustainability of Study Abroad programs in Spain.
Jane Andrews | Study Abroad Adviser @ University of Sydney
Jane works at the University of Sydney as a Study Abroad Adviser for inbound students from the Americas and Nordics. She has a history of working in Australian universities, providing first hand support to students to help them succeed both academically and personally. In 2022, Jane developed an extra-curricular Sustainability Program where students undertake a series of activities that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, with completion resulting in a digital credential.

CANIE Climate Dialogues - A LIVE Podcast Event: Discussing “Towards More Sustainable, Equitable and Just Internationalisation Practices”
As the climate crisis becomes more and more pressing, there is no way to keep ignoring the fact that if we want to address the environmental topic, we need to expand our focus on many other issues of social justice. In this podcast, we explore the intersectionality between climate change and social justice, incorporating the Global South perspective of Dr. Samia Chasi and Savo Heleta.

Antonio Gutiérrez | Director @ Celei Regenerative Education
Antonio Gutiérrez is a lifelong learner. He has extensive intercultural training and has traveled and developed connections in África, America, Europe and South East Asia. He firmly believes in Experiential Learning and critical thinking for a more conscious education. During the last 10 years, he has performed in many fields at Celei Regenerative Education. Antonio holds a degree in Biology from the University of Granada, but believes his multidisciplinary skills were developed through volunteering, working and traveling around the world.
Dr. Samia Chasi | Manager Strategic Initiatives, Partnership Development and Research @ International Education Association of South Africa
Dr Samia Chasi is a practitioner, scholar and facilitator in higher education internationalisation with more than 20 years of experience in this field. She is currently the Manager: Strategic Initiatives, Partnership Development and Research at the International Education Association of South Africa and a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State, South Africa. Before joining IEASA, she worked in international offices of German and South African universities, an agency of the European Commission as well as representations of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Nuffic and the British Council in South Africa.
Dr Chasi is passionate about facilitating deeper understanding and connections between diverse people and institutions by creating spaces for critical engagement and constructive dialogue. Her research interests lie in critical internationalisation, global South perspectives on higher education internationalisation, with a particular focus on decolonisation and South-North partnerships.
Dr. Savo Heleta | Researcher and Educator @ Durban University of Technology, South Africa
Dr Savo Heleta is a researcher and educator with more than ten years’ experience in higher education, academic research, curriculum development, teaching, research supervision and internationalisation. His research focuses on decolonisation of knowledge, higher education internationalisation, climate justice, and social justice advocacy and activism. Survivor of the Bosnian war, he is the author of 'Not My Turn to Die: Memoirs of a Broken Childhood in Bosnia' (AMACOM Books, 2008). Savo works as a researcher and internationalisation specialist at Durban University of Technology in South Africa.
